Crucified and Messiah?
A “Crucified Messiah”? Nothing but a blatant oxymoron! The two disciples journeying to Emmaus explained to their mysterious companion “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). ”We had hoped…” Clearly, Jesus could not possibly have been the Messiah because he was humiliated, crucified, and put to death. The real Messiah would reveal himself and then destroy the Roman occupation forces, liberate Israel, and usher in an era of peace, justice, and prosperity. In the breaking of the bread at table, Jesus reveals himself as the Crucified and Risen Messiah – much, much more than a mere military “messiah.” Jesus has conquered death through his resurrection from the dead! He is now the Lord of life, eternal life, who makes all things new.
