Angels: Heralds of Peace and Glad Tidings
G.K. Chesterton playfully asserts in his classic Orthodoxy that “angels can fly, because they can take themselves lightly.” Angels then have many talents and responsibilies: they fly, they sing, they stand watch, they herald peace and they announce glad tidings. God the Creator Mundi—the Creator of the world—does not need angels, archangels, guardian angels, or, for that matter, any other creature in any way. Nevertheless, in God’s unfathomable wisdom, God wills that angels in fact should exist in creation. God has given them a most unique place in the hierarchy of being: below God, but above human beings. As pure spirits like God, angels exist above human beings, not limited in any way by space or time. Like human beings, however, angels – as beings of intellect and will – think, imagine, and love. However, angels, like human beings, are below God, since they lack divine omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. The Doctor Angelicus of the Church, Saint Thomas Aquinas, insists that there is a nine-level hierarchy of heavenly beings within the hierarchy of being: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Angels. Angels stand at the bottom (ninth) within this heavenly hierarchy. But they stand first in the hearts and minds of many who seek their assistance and welcome their message of peace and glad tidings.
Review Minema15 – :
Being in Creator Mundi is a cross between being in a chapel and an art gallery. The people who worked there listened prayerfully to what I needed, and could not have helped more. In addition they left me longing to know them better and to share our faith journeys together . The art is deeply expressive of the individual artist’s faith, and designed to express what words alone cannot convey. It was a holy experience.
