Ecce Lignum Crucis! Behold the Wood of the Cross!
The Processional Cross carried in at the beginning of the celebration of Mass is a reminder of the instrument of our salvation: the wood of the cross. The corpus of the Crucified Christ on the cross is a reminder to the gathered faithful that Christ — now risen and glorified — nevertheless still bears the marks of his crucifixion and is still suffering with us: Christ is with each of us personally in our suffering and loss. Christ is with the Church – locally and globally – in its suffering and loss here on earth (the Ecclesia militans). Christ is with each and every person worldwide — anonymously or publicly, implicitly or explicitly — in their sufferings and loss. The cross is our hope and consolation. The wood of the cross is our hope and consolation. Christ still suffering on the cross, although risen and glorified, is our hope and consolation.
