Why do we process in with the Cross at the beginning and end of Mass?
Processing with the cross held high calls to mind John 3:13-15. Jesus reminds the Pharisee Nicodemus there of the Pharisees’ own affirmation of the doctrine of the Resurrection: No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. In other words, just as Moses lifted up the bronze snake in the desert so that all who beheld it might not die (Number 21:8-10), and just as Jesus, the Crucified Christ, is lifted high on the cross that all who believe in him might not ever die but rather live forever, so too do we who look upon the processional cross of Christ affirm our own belief in this promise of eternal life made possible through Jesus’ conquest of death on the cross and through his Resurrection into new and eternal life.

Why do Christians exalt the Cross of Christ? Pope Francis posed this question to tourists and pilgrims tourists gathered under the window of his study on September 14, 2014 for the midday Angelus. Pope Francis explained to them that we exalt the Cross of Christ as the source of the mercy of God that embraces the whole world. This cross is indeed the source of our salvation. The Pope warned those listening against viewing the cross as some sort of “magical” talisman: The Holy Cross….is not a sign of “magic”! Belief in the Cross of Jesus involves following Him on his path. Thus Christians collaborate in His work of salvation by accepting together with Him sacrifice, suffering, even death for the love of God and neighbor.
