Guardian Angels
In Matthew 18:10, Jesus talks about guardian angels: “See that you do not disdain one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in Heaven always see the face of my Father in Heaven.” To be sure, God has no need of archangels, guardian angels, or any other type of angel or intermediary, but God chose to create them and assign them in the hierarchy of being to a very special existence between God and humans. Like God, angels exist beyond the physical limitations of space and time and space – they are pure spirits. Like humans, angles possess can think love, and imagine, but they lack the divine attributes of omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. The “Angelic Doctor” – Saint Thomas Aquinas – established a nine-level hierachy of angels, from highest to lowest: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels (including Guardian Angels). Guardian Angels rank perhaps “lowest” on this hierarchy, but without a doubt they rank number one for the children who ask for their protection and guidance, as in, for example, this traditional Catholic prayer: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day/night be at my side to light, to guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
G.K. Chesterton writes in his classic book Orthodoxy: “Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly.” Angels fly and angels also rejoice, exult, glorify, praise, sing, and jubilate. So angels are neither gravity-challenged nor are they musically challenged. And they possess one more noteworthy characteristic: Angels guard, watch and protect.
