The Menorah as a Religious Symbol
The menorah is an important element in celebrating Passover. Moses was given instruction by God on the design of the menorah on Mt. Sinai (Exodus 25:31-40). There are seven-branch menorahs and nine-branch hanukiahs according to tradition which originally held lamps burning olive oil. Later, candles were used.
In many Orthodox Christian churches a seven-lamp menorah is placed on the altar. The Book of Revelation refers to seven golden lampstands which represent seven churches (Revelation 1:20).
The seven branches may also be seen to represent the seven days of creation: “Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done” (Genesis 2:1-3).
