On this plaque, Saint Francis — bearing the five holy wounds of Christ’s passion – (the stigmata) — preaches to the birds of the air and the fish of the sea. Francis encountered God in all of God’s creation and is now honored as the patron saint of animals, ecology and the environment (as well the Archdiocese of Denver, the state of Colorado, the City of San Francisco and many other causes!) The fact that Pope Francis has taken St. Francis of Assisi as his namesake seems to indicate that he is embarking on a program of radical reform of the Church.
