The Virgin Mother of Mercy – Icon of God’s “Womb-Love”
The Virgin Mother of Mercy’s love for her baby Jesus calls to mind the love that every mother has for her own child, and the love which God has for God’s people. In Hebrew, the word Rachamim (רחמים) is a greatly emotion-packed word often used to describe God. Rachamim is defined as “bowels, tender mercies, love, and pity.” This is the love which a mother has for the child she nurtured in her womb. Rachamim is closely associated with rechem , or “womb,” so when used in reference to God, rachamim speaks of God’s “womb-love” for God’s people: “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15).
