The Driftwood Mother and Child Statuette is a beautiful depiction of Mary with the Christ Child. This hand-carved wall hanging will make a most extraordinary and unique gift for a wedding or wedding anniversary, a special housewarming, a special thank you to a very generous donor, and for that special little chapel so near and dear to your heart!
Driftwood transformed into Exquisite Sacred Art
The Driftwood Mother and Child Statuette hangs 15 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 1.75 inches deep. A northern Italian artist discovered an old piece of driftwood, carved out the image of Mary and Child, and painted it by hand with an overlay of gold leaf. This is creative and “culturally authentic” sacred art at its finest, absolutely unique and truly exquisite, a most beautiful labor of love, faith and hope!
Mary the “God-Bearer” – the Mother of God
In 431 a.d., the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus solemnly defined Mary, the mother of Jesus, as the Theotokos (Θεοτόκος – Greek for “God-Bearer”), the Mother of God. Mary is the Theotokos because she gave birth not simply to a human being, but to God as a human being. Mary was a very young woman (probably still but a teenager) when she said Fiat – “Yes!” – to God and God’s plan for her and for the human race through her. Through this simple young woman from a small rural town in a remote backwater of the Roman Empire, God has indeed – in Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection – “brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble” (Luke 1:52).
