The Nativity, Bernardi 16″ Series, Praying Angel Facing Left – A Labor of Love, Hope and Faith
All sixteen pieces of the Bernardi Nativity 16″ Series are carved from wood, hand-painted, and hand-finished in a northern Italian workshop. The “Nativity scene” (known in Italy as a presepe or presepio, and in France as a crèche) is a noble 800-year old tradition in Italy. After all, the first “nativity scene” ever (and a “living” one at that!) was created in 1223 by an Italian (and now patron saint of Italy) – Saint Francis of Assisi (go to History/Story tab). While in the Holy Land on pilgrimage, St. Francis contemplated with his own eyes and touched with his own hands the very spot in the cave below the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem where (according to tradition) Jesus came into the world over 1,200 years earlier. Saint Francis brought the original Christmas night of Jesus’ birth to life again with a “nativity scene” of living persons and animals. By doing so, he allowed the faithful onlookers to engage their senses of sight, touch, smell, and hearing and in so doing to deepen their own worship of the Christ Child. The Bernardi Nativity is an exquisite expression of this great and storied Italian tradition. As such, it is a “culturally authentic” masterpiece and a marvelous labor of love, faith and hope!
