“Crucified” plus “Messiah” = Failure?
A “Crucified Messiah” is, quite simply, a pure oxymoron. The two disciples on their way to Emmaus certainly believed this. For they told their mysterious travel companion that “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). ”We had hoped…” The two disciples had been hoping for the Messiah, not a failed, humiliated and crucified prophet. Jesus could not possibly be the “anointed one” (messiah), the one who would smash the yoke of Roman oppression, free Israel, and begin the Messianic age. The Risen Jesus—by revealing himself to them in the breaking of the bread – shows that he is, in fact, much more than a mere military “messiah”—he has risen from the dead, destroyed death, and is now the Lord of Life. The Messiah who was nailed to a cross, the “Crucified Messiah”—now makes all things new.
