E Latere Christi—Blood and Water from the Side of Christ
The E Latere Christi Crucifix is rich in symbolism. The crucified Christ is central. Blood and water flows “from the side of Christ” (E latere Christi in Latin) which has been pierced by a Roman soldier (John 19:34). This flowing forth of blood and water symbolizes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. Mary stands at Christ’s right side and collects the flow of blood and water in a chalice. This is a rich symbol of the Eucharist: Christ’s blood sacrifice on the cross now remembered and reenacted in the celebration of every Eucharist. On the left side of the cross, Mary, John, the other Mary and a crowd of onlookers behold the crucified Christ (John 19:25-27). On the right side, the beginning of salvation history is recalled as Adam and Eve partake of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). Also pictured is the rooster, symbol of Peter’s threefold renunciation of Christ on the night before he died (Matthew 26:34-75). At the top of the cross, the dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit, descends and the Father’s hand points to his crucified son (Matthew 3:15-17). The crucifix, dove and hand together symbolize the Holy Trinity bringing about our salvation.
