Mary the Theotokos–Mary the “God-Bearer”
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was solemnly defined as the Theotokos (Θεοτόκος, Greek for “God-Bearer”) in 431 a.d. at the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus. She is the Theotokos because she gave birth not simply to a human being but to God as a human being. Mary was probably still a teenager when she said “Yes!” to God and God’s plan for her and for all of humanity through her.
