These lyrics belong to one of the most popular and comforting Christian hymns in the English language. Preacher Joseph M. Scriven wrote this poem in 1855 to comfort his mother living far away in Ireland while he was in Canada. Scriven originally published the poem anonymously, and only received full credit for it decades later. The tune to the hymn was composed by Charles Crozat Converse in 1868. William Bolcom composed a setting of the hymn. Contemporary bluegrass and country gospel singers continue to revive and keep this hymn alive for generations to come. What a friend we have in Jesus indeed!
