A Reminder that Noah’s Ark prefigures Christ’s Church
All the essential elements of the Noah story are present on this solid bronze cross: the Ark (Genesis 6:14-7:24), the Ark’s resting place on the peak of Mount Ararat (Genesis 8:1-5), the olive branch born by the dove (Genesis 8:6-12), and the Rainbow, God’s covenant with Noah and all humankind (Genesis 9:1-17). But the story of Noah’s Ark and the Flood is for Christians also about Christ’s Church. For just as Noah’s ark was the means by which he and his family did not drown in the Flood, so also is the Church the means by which Christians are saved. This cross is a wonderful expression of the unity of the Old and New Testaments. Noah’s Ark and Christ’s Church have an explicit biblical foundation in 1 Peter 3:17-22, where the waters of the Flood prefigure the waters of Baptism:
For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
Building on these words, St. Augustine of Hippo argues in Book XII of Contra Faustum that Noah’s Ark is a foreshadowing and symbol of the primary means of our salvation – the wood of Christ’s cross and the waters of baptism which wash away original sin.
