A “Crucified Messiah” on Calvary?
A “Crucified Messiah” is an oxymoron, if there ever was one. The two disciples making their way to Emmaus tell their unknown companion (the Risen Jesus) of their own dashed hopes: “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.” “We had hoped…” Clearly, they had hoped for a prophet of divine power, a military Messiah, to come and free Israel from the yoke of Roman oppression, and to usher in an age of Messianic prosperity, peace and justice. The Risen Jesus revealed himself to them, and to us, as much more than a mere military ruler: he is the Victor over death and Lord of life who will liberate and transform all of creation.
