The Shamrock and the Holy Trinity
The four-leaf clover is a rarer variation of the more common three-leaf clover. There are estimated to be 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover! According to tradition, a four-leaf clover is supposed to bring good luck to the one finding it by accident. Each leaf of the four-leaf clover is believed to have meaning: the first leaf is for faith, the second for hope, the third for love and the fourth for luck. Since luck is not one of the three theological virtues, a three-leaf clover, the shamrock—the diminutive of the Irish word seamair for “little clover” or “young clover”—is better suited to explaining these aspects of the Christian faith. And that is, according to legend, exactly what Saint Patrick of Ireland did, when he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity while he was preaching in Ireland in the 5th century.
