The Prophet Daniel in the Lions’ Den
In c. 590 B.C., Daniel was taken as a child to Babylonia where he remained faithful to his Jewish faith in of his upbringing in this foreign land. After the “God of Heaven” (Dan.2:18) empowered him to interpret the king’s dreams and visions, he became a prominent and influential figure in the royal court. Daniel had apocalyptic visions about the “Four Monarchies” (Daniel 2,7,8,11). Other famous events in Daniel’s life include: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednedgo in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3); the writing on the wall (Daniel 5); and Daniel in the lions’ den (Daniel 6:1-28, 14:23-42). This plaque depicts a story from “Bel and the Dragon” (Daniel 14:23-42): The prophet Habakkuk – miraculously carried by an angel – brings a meal to Daniel while he is still in the lions’ den. Daniel prays in response, “Thou hast remembered me, O God, and hast not forsaken those who love thee.” This plaque is a great gift for the feast day of the Prophet Daniel (July 29th), for a birthday, first communion, and especially for confirmation.
