Our Lady of Lourdes Statuette – An Edifiying Labor of Love, hope, and Faith
This statuette of the Our Lady of Lourdes stands 7.5 inches tall and is composed of dolomite stone and resin. Cloistered nuns conceive, create, and finish by hand each and every statuette that emerges from their atelier in their monastery in France. Each nun, a true contemplative in action, prayerfully fulfills a specific task essential to the completion of each piece. By whom, how, and where each and every statuette is created assures us that the Our Lady of Lourdes statuette is indeed ”culturally authentic” as well as a most edifying labor of love, hope and faith!
Our Lady of Lourdes – Symbol of God’s Healing Love
Our Lady of Lourdes appeared on numerous occasions in 1858 to a 14-year old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France. She admitted to her mother how, on February 11, 1858, a “lady” spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle, not far from town, while she, her sister, and a friend were gathering firewood. The validity of the apparitions to her has been attested to by the innumerable healings attributed to the water from the cave’s spring as well as to the fervent devotion towards Our Lady of Lourdes. In 1862, Pope Pius XI authorized the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes. The grotto of Lourdes has since then been widely copied and reproduced, often in shrines, and in many a garden landscape. The Grotto at the University of Notre Dame (French for “Our Lady”) in South Bend, Indiana as well as the Grotto at Saint Edward’s University in Austin, Texas are two of the most noteworthy examples.
