These are the first three letters of the name “Jesus” in Greek: ΙΗΣ (“Jesus” in Greek: ΙΗΣΟΥΣ or Ιησους). The crown of thorns on the left side of the plaque symbolizes the fact that the hymn “O sacred head, surrounded” (Latin: Salve, caput cruentatum) was attributed to St. Bernard.
