Saint Bridget of Sweden – Champion of the Roman Papacy
In 1350 Bridget braved a plague-stricken Europe and made a pilgrimage to Rome to obtain papal approbation of her new Order. This plaque depicts St. Bridget writing letters to Pope Urban V to convince him to return to Rome during the Avignon Papacy (1309-1378). The Pantheon (a symbol of Rome) shines in the left background. St. Bridget died in 1373, five years before the papacy returned to Rome for good.
