This is our stunning Saint Dorothy of Caesarea Plaque. Saint Dorothy (or Dorotheas) of Caesarea is a 4th-century virgin martyr. Evidence that she actually ever lived is extremely sparse. She and Theophilus are listed together in the Roman Martyrology as martyrs of Caesarea in Cappadocia. She is officially recognized as a saint, even though there is hardly any extant non-legendary account about her. This lovely plaque is an especially suitable gift for her feast day on February 6th, a birthday, first communion, or confirmation.

Saint Dorothy of Caesarea – The Fragrance of Martyrdom
The oft-told story of Saint Dorothy’s martyrdom is moving and beautiful: She vowed lifelong virginity, and refused to marry, or to sacrifice to idols. She was tried, tortured, and sentenced to death for her faith (the sword of her martyrdom is depicted on this plaque). The pagan lawyer Theophilus mocked her faith by saying, “Bride of Christ, send me some fruits from your bridegroom’s garden.” Before she was executed on February 6, 311, she sent to Theophilus a six-year-old boy (thought to have been an angel) carrying her headdress, pungent with the sweet fragrance of roses and fresh fruit. Upon receiving this marvelous gift (as depicted on this plaque), Theophilus converted and became himself a martyr. Saint Dorothy is now is the patron saint of gardeners.
