The “Eagle’s Eye” View of the Gospel of John
John is depicted on this bronze plaque narrating the Gospel of John to scribes. The eagle – the symbol of the Gospel of John – is in the top right corner of the plaque. Christian tradition has long paired the four “living creatures” standing around the throne of God in Revelation 4:7 with the four Evangelists: the human (angel) symbolizes St. Matthew, the lion symbolizes St. Mark, the ox symbolizes St. Luke, and the eagle symbolizes St. John. But the eagle is also John’s symbol because, as a high-flying creature of the sky, it was believed to be able to gaze straight at the sun without going blind. John gazes straight into Eternity and begins his gospel from this higher perspective with Jesus the Logos, the Eternal Word of God (In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.) The Gospel of John soars at a higher, more theological altitude than do the other three (synoptic) gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. This solid bronze plaque is an ideal gift for a birthday, name day, or confirmation.
