Our St. Jude Thaddeus Plaque (in Germany, St. Judas Thaddäus) – the “patron saint of impossible causes” – is depicted here holding the image of Jesus in his hand (go to History/Story tab) and preaching the Good News in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia and Libya. According to tradition (and as depicted in the bottom left of the plaque), he was marytred c. 65 AD in Beirut, Lebanon (then in the Roman province of Syria) by beheading or being clubbed to death. This solid bronze plaque is the perfect gift for a birthday, first communion, confirmation, and the feast day of Saint Jude Thaddeus on October 28th.

Jude or Thaddeus? – The Saint of Impossible Causes
“Jude, son of James” is listed among the Twelve Apostles in Luke 6:16 and Acts 1:13. But in the lists of the Twelve Apostles in Matthew 10:3 and Mark 3:18, “Thaddeus” is substituted for “Jude.” Consequently, since early times many have harmonized the two lists by joining the two names as “Jude Thaddeus.” “Thaddeus” was also preferred over time to “Jude” since “Jude” and “Judas” (as in “Judas Iscariot”) are the same name. But why is he the “patron saint of impossible causes”? According to tradition, after his death by martyrdom, pilgrims came to pray at his tomb where many of them experienced his powerful and efficacious intercession on their behalf. Thus arose the title “Saint for the Hopeless and the Despaired.” St. Bridget of Sweden and St. Bernard received visions from God who asked them to promote St. Jude as “The Patron Saint of the Impossible.”Saint Jude Holding The Image of Jesus in His Hand
Saint Jude is traditionally depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand or close to his chest, alluding to the legend of the Image of Edessa, recorded in apocryphal correspondence between Jesus and Abgar which is reproduced in Eusebius’ History Ecclesiastica, I, xiii. Eusebius relates that King Abgar of Edessa (now Sanhurfa in southeast Turkey) sent a letter to Jesus seeking a cure for an illness afflicting him. With the letter he sent his envoy Hannan, the keeper of the archives, offering his own home city to Jesus as a safe dwelling place. The envoy painted a likeness of Jesus with choice paints (or alternatively, impressed with Abgar’s faith, Jesus pressed his face into a cloth and gave it to Hannan) to take to Abgar with his answer. Upon seeing Jesus’ image, the king placed it with great honor in one of his palatial houses. After Christ’s execution, Thomas the Apostle sent Jude to King Abgar and the king was cured. Astonished, he converted to Christianity, along with many of the people under his rule.

Traditional Prayers to Saint Jude
A common Roman Catholic prayer to St Jude is:
“O most holy apostle, Saint Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honoureth and invoketh thee universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, and of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, who am so miserable. Make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded to thee, to bring visible and speedy help where help was almost despaired of. Come to mine assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with thee and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise thee, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour thee as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to thee. Amen.”
An alternative prayer:
“May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us, Saint Jude worker of Miracles, pray for us, Saint Jude helper and keeper of the hopeless, pray for us, Thank you Saint Jude.”
Novena to Saint Jude (Novenas are a prayer said for nine consecutive days):
“O Holy St Jude!
Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor for all who invoke you, special patron in time of need; to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart, and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power, to come to my assistance; help me now in my urgent need and grant my earnest petition. I will never forget thy graces and favors you obtain for me and I will do my utmost to spread devotion to you. Amen.”
