Devotion to the Sacred Heart
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque received several private revelations of the Sacred Heart. In the visions, she was to promote the form of the devotion with these main features: reception of Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month, Eucharistic adoration during a Holy Hour on Thursdays, and the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart. She was initially discouraged by her superiors from acting on these visions. Theologians and her own community rejected the validity of her visions. Eventually, wth the support of her Jesuit confessor, St. Claude de la Colombiere, S.J., who declared her visions genuine, she began to promote successfully this devotion. After she died in 1690, the devotion to the Sacred Heart was fostered by the Jesuits and eventually was officially recognized and widely practiced.
