Saint Michael the Archangel
An “angel of higher rank” is, in Greek, an “archangel.” Gabriel, Michael and Raphael are all archangels in Roman Catholic tradition. Their feast days is September 29th. This solid bronze plaque depicts the Archangel Michael holding up the scales of justice (Daniel 5:27) to weigh the souls in Purgatory. In this way he shows that he is the “enforcer” at the Last Judgment – just as at the beginning of creation he as a “cherubim” wielded the fiery sword to ban Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24). Saint Michael is traditionally believed to be present at the hour of death. He is charged with assisting the dying and accompanying the souls of the newly departed to their private judgment, bringing them to Purgatory, and after their entrance into Heaven, presenting them to God.
