Saint Stephen the Protomartyr – the “First Martyr” in the Church
Saint Stephen spoke truth to power. Stephen’s fiery speech to the Jewish authorities so enraged them that he was accused of blasphemy and stoned to death. This plaque depicts Saul of Tarsus (later known as St. Paul) in the background sitting as a witness to the stoning of St. Stephen. Stephen is often depicted wearing the “crown” (in Greek Στέφανος, Stephanos, in Latin: Stephanus) of martyrdom, with three stones, and holding the palm frond of martyrdom.
