A “Crucified Messiah” is a Contradiction in Terms!
A “Crucified Messiah” can be nothing but a contradiction in terms, a ridiculous oxymoron. The two disciples going to Emmaus were definitely of this mindset. They narrated to their mysterious travel companion that “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). ”We had hoped…” The two disciples had hoped for the messiah who would come, kill the Romans, free Israel and usher in a new era for the Jewish people. The Risen Jesus responds to them in the breaking of the bread. He reveals himself as vastly more than a mere military “messiah”—he is the Lord of life, the Conqueror of death, the Crucified and Risen Messiah, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, He who now makes all things new.
