This exquisite bronze crucifix with enamel inlay will make a wonderful gift for any special occasion, especially a big birthday, a baptism, a first communion, a confirmation, a wedding, a wedding anniversary, an ordination, and an ordination anniversary. “Crucified” plus “Messiah” = ?
A “Crucified Messiah” is an absolute contradiction in terms. The two disciples on their way to Emmaus certainly knew this. For they related to their anonymous travel companion that “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). ”We had hoped…” The two disciples had hoped for a real Messiah, not a humiliated and crucified prophet. Clearly, Jesus was not the “anointed one” (messiah) who would overcome the yoke of Roman oppression, liberate Israel, and usher in the Messianic age. The Risen Jesus responds to their discouragement definitively: he reveals himself as risen from the dead. He is much more than a mere military messiah! Jesus is the Victor over death and Lord of life! He is, yes, the “crucified Messiah” who makes all things new.
