Crucified and Messiah?
A “Crucified Messiah” is the least likely combination – an oxymoron if there ever was one! The two disciples journeying to Emmaus certainly thought so. They explained to their mysterious travel companion (the Risen Jesus): “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). “We had hoped…” Clearly, “crucified” and “Messiah” were not two words that they would have ever combined! They imagined, they wanted, they expected, a Messiah who would – with overwhelming military might – annihilate the Roman occupation, liberate the Jewish people, and usher in an era of justice, prosperity, and peace. But Jesus accomplished much, much more than a mere military victory. Jesus conquered death, once for all, in his resurrection! Jesus is not a military Messiah. Rather, he is THE one true, Messiah, Christ, Anointed One, who – though crucified unto death – broke the bonds of death forever for himself and all of us. In his resurrection, he destroys death, and restores and transforms life for a new creation.
