“Crucified” + “Messiah” = ???
“Crucified” and “Messiah” are two words that simply do not go together. The two disciples making their way to Emmaus certain knew this as they told their mysterious traveling companion (the Risen Jesus) of their own dashed hopes: “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.” “We had hoped…” Clearly, if Jesus had been the Messiah, he could never have been crucified to death! They expected him to reveal himself as a powerful, military Messiah who would now free the Jewish people from the yoke of Roman oppression, and then usher in his Messianic age of peace, prosperity, and justice. The Risen Jesus, however, revealed himself to the two disciples as much more than a mere military conqueror: he is the Conqueror over death and Lord of life – the “Crucified Messiah” who now makes all things new.
