This bronze The Crucified Messiah Crucifix depicts Jesus in John 19:30 just after he has uttered “It is finished!,” bowed his head, and died. The INRI at the top of this cross stands for the Latin words “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum” (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). The INRI stands in as an abbreviation for the inscription in Aramaic, Greek and Latin which was nailed to the top of Jesus’ cross by order of Pontius Pilate (John 19:19-20). This crucifix is a meaningful gift for a birthday, baptism, first communion, confirmation and ordination. This is a gift of heirloom quality that will be treasured and passed down from one generation to the next.

A “Crucified” Messiah?
A “Crucified Messiah” certainly seems like the last thing you would expect. It certainly was for the two disciples making their way to Emmaus. They explained to their anonymous travel companion (the Risen Jesus) that “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). “We had hoped…” Clearly, they were expecting a very different sort of Messiah! The kind of Messiah would crush the Roman occupation, liberate Israel, and usher in right away the Messianic Age of justice, peace and prosperity. But by the very fact that he has risen victorious over death, Jesus is showing them that he is much, much more than a mere military Messiah. Jesus is the one true Christ, Anointed One, Messiah, who, though crucified unto death, has conquered death once for all and is now transforming all of creation.
